The Ungiftables

Sitting here today, laptop …on lap!

I’m thinking how lucky I am. A couple of weeks to go before the big C day and I’ve got miles of stuff to do - half the present shopping left to buy - not to mention the decs and food - and what about the cards!

I could be (as I have in the past) terrified about all this - but this year for a million reasons I seem to have taken my foot off the pedal, and it's such a relief.

New grandbabies to concentrate on is one thing - but the other is the fact that I must - we must (it’s the same for all of us mothers out there) take more care of ourselves, and hand the reins over to the young.

No matter how old they are I feel such massive guilt in doing that. I still remember the days when they’d fight for the best place on the sofa upon entering the house, demanding sandwiches and fighting over the remote. Now they are able and very willing to do more than their fair share - I feel a bit guilty….but am working on it!
.
So feeling more chilled than usual it was lovely being approached by Groupon to man their Christmas SOS hotline, and I jumped at the chance.
I love being around and interacting with people anyway - and to be involved in a bit of retail therapy is wonderful - especially as it’s not all down to me!

Groupon came up with the idea of helping people to choose gifts for the ‘Ungiftables’ - the people we all have in our life who are a bit tricky to buy for. Sitting here manning the phones was such fun and I’m loving hearing everybody else’s nightmares - and can well relate to most of them!

We all hate wasting money and we all want to get in right. No more ‘thank you I love it have you got the receipt’ - which is frustrating and not a little hurtful when you’ve slogged it around town getting barged around vying for a position at the till.

I’ve never really thought about buying somebody ‘an experience’. Day at a spa, or tea in some flash hotel with champagne and naughty cakes. Never thought about a race day in a flash car for a man in your life - or even tickets for a show - flying lessons, or a (my personal favourite) winery experience!

Anyway enough from me now - but I just wanted to share this with you - as I wish somebody had me years ago, when the thought of Christmas shopping would bring me out in a sweat!

I’m really tempted to mix the experiences up a bit - give the flying lessons to my least favourite aunt who’s terrified of planes - but that would be unfair, especially as it's the season of goodwill - but old habits die hard - and Rome wasn’t built in a day!
